10 Golden Rules for Housing

 

1. For two guinea pigs, the cage should be at least 4 feet (120 cm) ong, 3 feet (80cm) wide, and  18 inches (45 cm) high


2. Choose a cage with horizontal bars made of galvanized or chrome plated wire


3. The plastic bottom tray should be about 6 inches (16 cm) deep, trays more then 10 inches (25 cm) deep obsruct the animals' view


4. Water bottles with sipper tubes, hay racks, and food bowls are essential


5. The nest box should be able to accommodate all the animals at one. If the cage is large enough, get a second nest box


6. The ideal setup consists of two cages, one for playing and one for sleeping, connected by a bridge


7. The cage should bave a partition so that a lower ranking animal can keep out of sight of the higher ranking one


8. Pine shavings make good bedding, but don't use peat moss or cat litter. Spread the bedding 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) deep


9. Redecorate the inside of the cage frequently, for example with bricks or strong branches


10. Place the cage in a quite, well lit spot away from drafts
