The Alpaca/Boucle "boo-clay" (in Europe) is a curly-coated Peruvian originally bred from crossing Peruvians to Texels. Boucle (pronounced booclay) is French for "curly" and is an appropriate nae for these unique looking cavies. This breed was brought to standardization in Canada in 1999 by rare-breeds enthusiast Robert Stilson. The adult Boucle has a long, curly frontal and lots of dense shoulder coat. Like the Peruvian, only the two rump rosettes are desired.

The Alpaca/Boucle is often confused with the Texel. Alpaca are coarse haired Peruvians with the frontal falling over the face and making the pig look like thick rug, while Texel is a coarse haired Silkie/Sheltie.

When Alpacas are young they have two rosettes in the rump coat which pushes the coat forward like the Peruvian.
