Conjunctivitis (Eye Infection)

 

Signs/symptoms: Cloudy film over eye, redness, swelling, may have discharge, eye may be stuck closed


Causes: Bacterial infection, irritation or injury from bedding or dust


Treatment:

1. If eye is stuck closed, carefully moisten eye and clean area so eye can be opened

2. Place Terramycin ophthalmic ointment from your veterinarian or the feed store in eye 2 to 3 times daily until eye is clear. Or place triple antibiotic (Bacitracin-Neomycin-Polymyxin) ophthalmic ointment in eye 2 to 3 times daily until eye is clear

3. You may also give, along with the antibiotic, a half capsule of vitamin A in the eye 1 to 2 times daily
