Coprophagy

Although it may be a little unpleasant to think about or discuss, guinea pig owners need to be aware that their pets will eat their own droppings from time to time. This habit is called coprophagy.

Because guinea pigs are one of the smallest grass-eating mammals, they do not have a long digestive system to assist them in processing their food. to help maintain the bacterial balanced in their digestive tract, they occasionally consume special soft waste pellets called cecotropes, which contain vitamin B vitamins and bacteria needed to maintain healthy digestion and to process their hay-based diet effectively.

Cecotrope pellets are not the same as regular feces and must be consumed to maintain good health. Do not discourage your guinea pig from doing this!
