Peruvians have the longest hair of all the cavy breeds, this breed has a long, sweeping coat that drags on the ground, and must have rosettes on the back. In early times Peruvians were reffered to as Angoras, but now called by their breed names.

The Peruvians has long hair that grows forward because of the presence of rosettes on the cavy body's, covering the face with fringe called the "frontal" and flowing past the sides and rump in "sweeps". Only two rossetes on the rump are desired for Peruvians, because any more can prevent the coat from flowing smoothly. The rosettes cause the hair to grow forward and are not noticeable on adult Peruvians. Baby Peruvians resemble Abyssinians with long hair.

The hair will grow about 12 inches in one year if properly cared for. To allow the hair to grow without it becoming soiled or tangled, it is placed in wrappers. A wrapper large enough to enclosed a sweet is made from a piece of cloth or paper. The wrapper is folded in half, the hair is placed inside, and then the wrapper is folded two or three times until it lies againts the cavy's body. The wrapper is secured with an elastic band or clip, snugly but not so tight as to cause discomfort. The hair must be taken out, combed, and rewrapped every few days. Patience is needed with young cavies as they get used to this process.

When groomed for presentation, the adult Peruvian is placed on a board, usually covered with burlap. The hair is combed forward and outward so that it encircles the animal with a fringe, making it hard to tell the head from the rump. Younger Peruvians will not have as much lenght and are judged more on the texture and density of the hair.
