Mites: Ear

Signs/symptoms: Shaking head, sratching head and ears, dirty, reddish brown “wax” inside ear

Causes: Tiny parasites brought in on bedding or spread by an infected guinea pig

Treatment:

1. Separate infected animals from noninfected animals (keep a close watch on noninfected animals)

2. Clean ears gently with cotton swabs and a tiny amount of alcohol

3. Fill ear canal with a miticide for cats twice daily for 2 weeks, or longer if necessary, until reddish brown “wax” is gone and ear stays clean
